On October 4, 1957, history was made. The former Soviet Union was able to launch Sputnik I successfully. This was the first artificial satellite in the world. It was nearly the size of a basketball, weighed only 183 pounds, and took approximately 98 minutes to orbit the Earth. The creation and launch of Sputnik played a major role in new political, military, technological, and scientific developments. The Sputnik launch marked the beginning of the space age, as well as the space race between U.S.S.R. and U.S, which was a key characteristic of the Cold War.

The Soviet scientists created buildings, bridges, and other civilian structures in the vicinity of the bomb, in order to measure the impact of the blast. Also, they had animals in cages close by, so they could test the impact of nuclear radiation on mammals similar to humans.
